HANDMADE PRODUKT RESEARCH DEPARTMENT

About KNITSONIKTM

From 4th to 7th May sound artist Felicity Ford will take up residence in London’s edgy Prick Your Finger Gallery/Haberdashery, to explore relationships between knitting and sound.

Frequently irritated by the noisy nature of her jeans and jacket while out recording environmental sounds, Ford will draw inspiration from the Prick Your Finger library and materials stash to design knitting patterns for sensible yet silent knitted garments for the would be field-recordist. Design drawings, swatches and moodboards for the Knitsonik collection will be prominently displayed in the befitting environment of Prick Your Finger.

Amidst working on her designs, Ford will interview visitors about the things they listen to while they knit. Using these interviews and sounds from around Prick Your Finger, she will then compile and collate enough audio for a site-specific audio work celebrating the sonic life of textiles and craft.

On Thursday 12th May, there will be a public event at which the public will be welcomed to the gallery to experience the fruits of this research residency. After this, an online journal will document the process of turning all the ideas developed in the gallery into knitted reality and PDF patterns.
